How to Use Cotton Wicks for Candle Making

Follow this step-by-step process for perfectly wicked candles every time:

Step 1 — Cut to length. Measure the depth of your container or candle mold and cut the cotton wick to that depth plus an extra 2–3 cm to extend above the wax surface after pouring. For a 7 cm tall jar, cut an 9–10 cm wick.

Step 2 — Attach to wick tab. Thread the bottom of the wick through a metal wick tab (wick sustainer). Crimp the tab firmly with pliers to secure the wick. The tab keeps the wick anchored to the base of your container during pouring.

Step 3 — Centre the wick. Use a wick centering tool, a wooden skewer, or two popsicle sticks resting across the top of the jar to hold the wick perfectly vertical and centred before you pour. This is the step most beginners skip — and it causes lopsided melt pools. Off-centre wicks are one of the top causes of tunneling and uneven burns.

Step 4 — Melt and add fragrance. Melt your soy wax or paraffin wax to the correct temperature. Add fragrance oil at a fragrance load of 6–10% by weight of the wax. Stir gently for 2 minutes to bind the fragrance fully into the wax before pouring.

Step 7 — Trim before burning. Always trim your wick to 6 mm before lighting a candle. A long wick produces a larger flame, faster wax consumption, mushrooming, and soot on the jar walls. A properly trimmed wick gives a clean, controlled flame throughout the burn.
